Premiere of "The Glass Castle" - Arrivals

FOR fans that watched Gypsy or read the show’s reviews, the news that Naomi Watts’ drama has been cancelled after only one season mightn’t come as a surprise.

The show, which starred Watts as a manipulative, bisexual therapist, was

almost universally panned by critics

for its slow pace and lacklustre storytelling.

Gypsy’s

day on the chopping block — a mere six weeks after it premiered — is the fastest a show has ever been cancelled.

While the cancellation,

first reported on by

Deadline,

mightn’t be a surprise for most people, it is definitely a controversial one.

According to

Deadline,

today’s cancellation comes a full four weeks after the writers room for

Gypsy

season two was up and running.

A number of the show’s stars including Naomi Watts and Lisa Rubin, the writer behind

Gypsy,

have since commented on the cancellation.

Sending so much love and thanks to the incredible cast and crew on #gypsynetflix we had a blast. @rubin.lisa @lizacliza #netflix

Oh, how i'll miss these faces - and characters - but privileged and honored to have created this show. And worked with such an incredible cast and crew, along the way. Thank you to the loyal fans who have fallen for Jean and been so supportive. On to the next thrilling adventure... x #gypsynetflix
