Jaguar create the first production battery electric vehicle race series for the FIA Formula E series.

Jaguar announced today, Sept.12, that it has created the first production battery electric vehicle race series for the FIA Formula E series.

The championship, announced after news that the British government plans to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars from 2040, will support the launch next year of the Jaguar I-PACE five-seat battery electric sports car. Up to 20 electric I-PACE racecars will be on the grid in 10 races in global cities such as Hong Kong, Paris, Sao Paolo and New York. ‘Arrive and Drive’ packages will be offered for each race, including a different VIP Driver at every venue.

Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations in Warwickshire, UK, will build the racecars.

While Jaguar is the first luxury brand to compete in the race series, BMW may not be far behind. The Munich, Germany-based car maker also announced today, Sept., 12, its i Vision Dynamics four-door Gran Coupe, debuting during the Frankfurt auto show. The car has a battery driving range of 373 miles, a top speed of more than 120 mph and 0-62 mph acceleration in four second.

“At the BMW Group, the future of electric mobility has already arrived,” Harald Krueger, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW AG, said in a release. “By 2025 we will be offering 25 models with an electrified drive system – of which 12 will be pure-electric.”

The BMW i Vision Dynamics will fit between the i3 and i8, Krueger said. “We are therefore electrifying the heart of the BMW brand and, at the same time, elevating BMW i into a totally new dimension.”
