SANDUSKY, Ohio - HalloWeekends, Cedar Point's popular annual fall festival,  opens Friday with new haunted houses, spooky themed rides and the return of musical duo Midnight Syndicate.

New this year: Cedar Point is theming several rides, including the Cedar Creek Mine Ride. For the next seven weeks, it will be known as the Cedar Creek Mystic Mine Ride and include new special effects in the covered area before the first hill.

The name is a nod to Mystic Timbers, the themed roller coaster that debuted earlier this year at Kings Island, which includes a high-tech video and light show at the end.

Also getting some spooky theming: Ocean Motion, dubbed Ocean Potion for HalloWeekends, with new water effects; the Witches Wheel, with a haunted soundtrack and lighting; and the Monster, now the Friendly Monster, with spooky eyes and new music.

Also new at HalloWeekends 2017:

* Deprivation, a new haunted house with "pulse-pounding claustrophobia," which replaces Eden Musee at the back of the park.

* Fearground Freakshow - "a freakshow gone awry" - which replaces Eternity Infirmary, also at the back of the park.

* Harvest Fear, a new outdoor haunted zone, in FrontierTown, at the back of the park.

The park also is adding a beginner haunted house, Hexed Spellbound, a tamer version of Hexed. It will be open Saturdays and Sundays during the day.

And returning to HalloWeekends: Midnight Syndicate, the Cleveland-area musical group that specializes in spooky soundtrack music.

The duo -- Edward Douglas and Gavin Goszka - made their HalloWeekends debut in 2014 at the Goodtime Theatre.

The theater was torn down in 2015 to make room for a new roller coaster, Valravn, which opened last year. This year, Midnight Syndicate will perform at the Jack Aldrich Theatre on the Main Midway.

As in years past, HalloWeekends includes both scary and family-friendly shows and attractions.

The kid-friendly Great Pumpkin Fest includes trick or treating, costume contests, plus the Great Pumpkin Parade at 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

HalloWeekends runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 29. Ticket prices range from $43 to $69. Hours vary. Information: cedarpoint.com/halloweekends.

In case you missed it: For the first time, Cedar Point is offering a free Pre-K pass for young visitors, ages 3-5. While the pass is free, parents must register their children in advance online (cedarpoint.com/tickets-passes/pre-k-pass). Children have to visit the park by June 29, 2018, to activate the pass. Proof of age is required.
