Texas structures resemble vintage-looking alien spaceships

The Futuro Houses were designed in the 1960s by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen as cheap homes that could be placed

What were supposed to be the homes of the future are now just crumbling shells resembling abandoned alien spaceships.

These prefab structures are called Futuro Houses, designed in the 1960s by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen as "a cheap, durable, and stylish little dwelling that could be placed in any environment," Atlas Obscura reported.

Less than 100 of these fiberglass and plastic homes were made and installed around the world, including two that rest on the outskirts of Dallas. One sits abandoned on Highway 276 in Royse City and another on private property in Rockwall that is reportedly used for storage.

"While almost a hundred of the pieces were created and placed around the world from America to New Zealand, a number of them were shot down by zoning laws, or demolished," Atlas Obscura wrote. "The oil crisis in the 1970s made the use of plastic prohibitive and production of the houses was stopped. Despite the objections of some, architecture aficionados took to the buildings and were able to preserve many of them, while those without protection simply fell into ruin."

The homes, which came in 16 pieces for easy assembly and disassembly, have become popular destinations for urban explorers and photographers, including Steve Rainwater. He has captured images of the graffiti-filled building in Royse City dating back to 2003.

In a comment on Flickr, Rainwater speculates that the Futuro House in Royse City may have been part of a Texas State Fair demonstration a long time ago.

"There are at least two Futuro houses remaining in the Rockwall area and rumors of others scattered around Texas," Rainwater wrote six years ago.

In 2014, a Futuro House in Berlin, New Jersey, went on sale on eBay for $29,900, the Huffington Post reported. There doesn't appear to be any Futuro homes for sale on eBay at the moment.
