Villa Amantea restaurant in Garden City closed permanently

After more than 42 years in business Villa Amantea restaurant closes its doors. Customers are saddened.

Villa Amantea restaurant, a long-time Italian eatery located on west Warren in Garden City, has abruptly closed its doors. Reached by phone Wednesday, owner Sam Porco said “effectively, I was closed Monday.”

Amantea offered an extensive menu of Italian fare, including pastas and pizza. It was also known for its catering and banquet services, and as a place for wedding and baby showers and funeral luncheons.

Porco, 46, cited a drop-off in sales, and said the restaurant is “just going out of business because they can’t sustain.” It has been open for a little more than 42 years.

For the past 5 ½ years, Porco has overseen the management of the restaurant. He took over for his father, Domenico Porco, 73, who continued to be involved. The elder Porco built the restaurant 42 years ago.

“He was there seven days a week. He helped do everything from manage to mentor to preparation,” Porco said of his father. “Garden City is a great community with great people. I thank them for helping my family for that many years.”

Comments — more than 200 — posted on a Westland Community News Facebook page made it clear the community is sad about the restaurant's closure.

“There’s been a tremendous outpouring of love. I’ve been on the phone with customers all day yesterday,” Porco said. “I am giving deposits back to people who have future parties.”

The closure does come with some bitterness and disappointment.

On the restaurant's Facebook page, there is an Oct. 3 post stating management was looking to hire staff. It appears its staff was unaware of the pending closure or notified abruptly. One Facebook comment was from a person who said they had just been hired and then received a phone call about the closing.

Porco said Amantea had a staff of 48 people, mainly part-timers.

“I think we did a lot of good here," Porco said. "It’s sad. There’s a little bit of bittersweet, but it makes me feel good how the community has responded."
