After Las Vegas shooting, Baltimore officials reviewing security of large outdoor events

Mayor Catherine Pugh said Wednesday that Baltimore officials are reviewing security procedures for large outdoor events after Sunday’s deadly shooting at a music festival in Las Vegas.

“We’re having conversations now with Emergency Management,” Pugh said. “We’re looking at big events we have to make sure security is there.”

Two large running events — the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the Baltimore Running Festival — are expected to draw thousands of participants to Baltimore this month.

“There are several huge events coming up,” Pugh spokesman Anthony McCarthy said. “She wants to make sure people coming from out of town feel comfortable … and those who live here in the city know we are prepared for any scenario.”

The Maryland Stadium Authority said Tuesday state officials were reviewing security at Camden Yards, which is overlooked by the Hilton Hotel and other high rises like the Pandora Building in downtown Baltimore.

In Las Vegas, gunman Stephen Paddock, 64, smashed out windows in a 32nd floor room in Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino and fired on concertgoers below, killing 59 and injuring more than 500.

Pugh said she also believed state officials should restart debate over whether to require a medical certification of a person’s mental health before allowing the sale of a gun.

“There are discussions that need to be had about how do you go about accessing guns, how many guns should you be able to have,” the mayor said. “This individual had an exorbitant amount of guns. We live in a world where there are countries where guns aren’t even used at all.”
