bid farewell to summer with its 4th annual Rock the Block Party over the weekend, closing off streets to open up the City Centre.

There were 18 restaurants participating on York Street on either side of Schiller, with more tables and chairs for guests to enjoy their food.

Christy Sopko, event coordinator for Elmhurst City Centre, said the number of restaurants has grown as the event has become more popular. While some restaurants in early years might have just come out for the marketing, now she believes food vendors are turning a profit as well.

"I think it's going to grow somewhat every year," she said.

Sopko estimates 20,000 people took part in the event over the two days, based on conversations with police, band organizers and other participants.

One popular attraction has been the family fun area, which this year ran for five hours on Saturday. Activities included face painting, jewelry making, arts & crafts and numerous games such as a bucket toss, giant connect 4 and bags.

In addition to support from the Elmhurst Public Library and Elmhurst Park District, this year businesses were invited to offer activities for the family fun area.

"Six or seven of them took us up on that," Sopko said.
