A Glendale man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of raping a woman while her 2-year-old son was nearby, according to court records.

Bisimo Emedi, 23, faces charges of sexual assault, kidnapping, second-degree burglary and second-degree escape, according to the Maricopa County Superior Court document.

Phoenix police responded to an attempted burglary at a Phoenix apartment complex about 3:25 a.m. Sunday after a call from a man who said he had been on the phone with a woman he knew who feared someone was breaking into her home, the court document said.

Responding officers found a window with blood on it and the victim who was crying and unclothed, as well as a partially clothed man, later identified as Emedi, who was hiding in a closet holding the victim's son, the court document said.

Emedi was handcuffed and separated from the victim and the boy, the court document said. He attempted to run away but was caught by police officers, the court record said.

The victim told police that Emedi, whom she had seen walking in the area before, broke into her house through a window, grabbed her son, threatened the woman and forced her into a closet, where he raped her, the court document said.

During an interview with investigators, Emedi said the victim was his girlfriend and said he didn't understand why he was in custody, the court document said. However, when asked for her name, phone number and birthday, he wasn't able to answer, the court document said.

He later told investigators he was having personal struggles and broke into her residence, the court document said.
