In only its second year, the Oak Park Animal Care League's Mutt Strut has become a key fundraiser for the shelter.

Taking place Sept. 9 at Maple Park, the Mutt Strut began with a 1.5-mile walk through the neighborhood adjacent to the park. Once guests returned to the park, a variety of activities, games and live entertainment were available for all strutters.

"People can walk with or without their dogs," Animal Care League Executive Director Kira Robson said. "We had live music, canine massages and a ton of great community partners on-hand."

The Mutt Strut proved so successful, the Animal Care League ran out of T-shirts for registrants as more than 100 people arrived at Maple Park to take part in the event.

In addition to the success of its fundraisers, Robson said she received a challenge from a local donor, which brought more good news for the Animal Care League.

"A gentleman, who preferred to remain anonymous, said if our registrants raised $10,001, then he would donate an additional $5,000," Robson said. "We just received his check. It was pretty cool all-around."

In addition to the registration fees and fundraising done by participants, the Animal Care League accepted donations on-site, which were still being tabulated Monday morning.

"We're still tallying all of our donations because we had a really good turnout and everyone really came through with the fundraising piece," Robson said. "Our registrants really blew it out of the water with their fundraising. It was a great day for us."
