MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A man wanted for murder in Pittsburgh has been apprehended in Myrtle Beach, according to Myrtle Beach Police.

Matthew Darby, 21, was captured Wednesday at approximately 12:48 a.m. on Withers Drive. According to Action 4 News in Pittsburgh, he is wanted for allegedly killing his former girlfriend, 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student Alina Sheykhet, at her off-campus apartment on Cable Place in Oakland, a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, on Sunday morning. The medical examiner said Sheykhet suffered injuries described as "sharp/blunt trauma of the head."

Darby appeared in court in Myrtle Beach at 9 a.m Wednesday.  The judge asked Darby if he would waive his right to an extradition hearing or would he want a hearing. Darby responded that he wanted to speak with his lawyer before making a decision on extradition.

With regards to his two MBPD charges, giving false info and loitering, the judge asked Darby if he wanted to plead guilty or not guilty to those charges. Darby responded again that he want to speak with his lawyer first before responding. The judge indicated that on his sheet as a “not guilty.”

The judge then moved on to bond. For the MBPD charges, the judge set bond at $1,087. However for the fugitive charge relating to the criminal homicide in Pennsylvania, and some other listed charges including burglary, the judge deemed Darby to be a flight risk and danger to the community, denying bond. No follow up date was set.

A concerned citizen contacted law enforcement early Wednesday morning after Darby was allegedly tampering with a residence. During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the suspect was wanted by authorities in Pittsburgh for murder, a press release from MBPD states.

Darby is expected to be extradited to Pennsylvania once the extradition process is complete.

Darby has criminal background, and a history with with Sheykhet, his former girlfriend. According to a timeline from Pittsburgh NBC affiliate WPXI, Darby was accused of assaulting and raping a woman in Indiana County, PA in February 2017. He had a preliminary hearing on those charges in June - most were held for court, three others were dismissed.

On Sept. 20, Darby was accused of breaking into Sheykhet's home in the Oakland neighborhood, WPXI reports. Darby is accused of climbing up the gutter on the side of the home and breaking through a second-floor window. The next day, Sheykhet filed a protection from abuse order against Darby.

On Oct. 8, investigators said Darby placed five phone calls to Sheykhet's cell phone. None of those calls were answered. Later that day, Sheykhet was found murdered inside her home by her parents, her brother said. Her roommates told them she was still sleeping and when she didn’t answer, her dad kicked in a door.
