Slidell council OKs additional night parade; Poseidon to move into evening slot

The Slidell City Council unanimously approved an ordinance at its Oct. 10 meeting that allows a third evening Carnival

The Slidell City Council unanimously approved an ordinance at its Oct. 10 meeting that allows a third evening Carnival parade to be added to the 2018 schedule.

Though no specific group was mentioned in the ordinance, the move was made to accommodate the Krewe of Poseidon, which has become the largest Carnival organization on the north shore despite parading only twice previously.

Poseidon now will join the krewes Selene and Titans on Slidell's evening schedule. The city allowed only two evening parades in previous years.

"With 550 members (for the 2018 parade,) we're looking forward to putting on a great night show," Poseidon Captain Ronny Kastner said.

Slidell Councilwoman at Large Kim Harbison asked Slidell Assistant Police Chief Kevin Swann if the department had any concerns about adding another parade to the 2018 evening schedule.

Swann said no and that Chief Randy Fandal, who was at a police convention at the time of the council meeting, supported the idea.

With the police department's backing, the ordinance was amended by a 9-0 vote.

Kastner confirmed that Poseidon now is scheduled to roll on Saturday Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. on the traditional Pontchartrain Blvd. to Gause Blvd. route.
