A GUNMAN has been arrested after opening fire at a school in the US state of Washington, leaving one student dead and five wounded.

It is not clear if the suspect was a student at the school.

Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said at 11.30am Wednesday (4.30am Thursday AEST) that one person was killed and that “the threat from the shooter has been eliminated”.

He said three of the victims were immediately transported to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Centre.

Hospital spokeswoman Liz DeRuyter said they are in a stable condition and no others are expected to arrive.
