U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner on Friday said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has the “confidence of the conference” amid President Donald Trump’s attacks this week on the top GOP lawmaker.

“I have no doubt that, working together, we’ll show a better future for all,” the Colorado Republican said in a tweet.

On Thursday, Trump took to Twitter to slam McConnell over Senate Republicans’ inability late last month to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The failure has led to unrest in the party with some conservatives frustrated with the lack of progress despite their party being in control.

“Can you believe that Mitch McConnell, who has screamed Repeal & Replace for 7 years, couldn’t get it done. Must Repeal & Replace ObamaCare!” Trump posted.

He tweeted against hours later: “Mitch, get back to work and put Repeal & Replace, Tax Reform & Cuts and a great Infrastructure Bill on my desk for signing. You can do it!”

Later in the day on Thursday, Trump told reporters that the failure to pass a health care bill was “a disgrace.”

“Frankly, it shouldn’t have happened,” Trump said, suggesting McConnell resign if he is unable to push health care legislation through and tackle taxes and infrastructure.

Earlier in the week, McConnell told an audience in his home state of Kentucky that Trump had “not been in this line of work before” and had “excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process.” Both before and after taking office, Trump spoke repeatedly about passing the massive health care overhaul quickly.

Asked to respond to Trump’s statement, McConnell spokesman David Popp said, “The leader has spoken repeatedly about the path forward regarding Obamacare repeal and replace on the Senate floor, at media availabilities and in Kentucky.”
