CLEVELAND, Ohio - Kevin Bishop grabbed the early lead in Tuesday's Ward 2 primary election among candidates seeking to replace Zack Reed on Cleveland City Council.

Kevin L. Bishop, who owns Kadillac Transportation Services LLC, collected 30.4 percent of the absentee votes, according to unofficial returns from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

Following Bishop was Geoff Fitch, an Ohio State University graduate and an economic development specialist, who captured 19.6 percent of the absentee vote.

The top two finishers in Tuesday's nonpartisan primary will advance to the Nov. 7 general election. The absentee vote includes mail-in ballots already received by the elections board and those cast early in person.

Here's the rest of the field:

  • Azel E. Bolden, a Huntington National Bank employee, 8.3 percent.
  • William Chris Daniel, 2.2 percent.
  • Carol Ford, a nursing home worker and officer of the Service Employees International Union District 1199 who is part of the Raise Up Cleveland committee that sought a $15 minimum wage for Cleveland, 9.8 percent.
  • Kenya Gray, an adult parole officer with Cuyahoga County who spent 20 years with the Army National Guard, 8.3 percent
  • Debra Lewis-Curlee, the president of the Ward 2 Democratic Club and a former executive director of the Mount Pleasant Community Zone, 17.8 percent.
  • Tony Minor, advocacy director at Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry, 2.6 percent.

The candidates are seeking to replace Reed, who has represented Ward 2 on City Council for 16 years. Reed chose not to seek re-election and instead is a challenger in the mayoral race.
