A police pursuit of an armed Gastonia bank robbery suspect ended in a deadly wreck on Wednesday.

A police pursuit of an armed Gastonia bank robbery suspect ended in a deadly wreck on Wednesday.

The pursuit began after the PNC Bank in the 500 block of South New Hope Road was robbed at 4:35 p.m., Gastonia Police said.

Five to eight minutes after the robbery, Gastonia Police and Gaston County Police officers saw the car suspected of having been involved in the holdup and tried to stop it at Garrison Boulevard and U.S. 321.

“At one point some money flew out the window during the pursuit, and the suspect vehicle ended up crashing in the intersection of U.S. 321 and Crowders Creek Road,” Gastonia police said in a statement.

The person believed to be the primary suspect in the robbery died in the crash, Gastonia Police said. A female driving the car was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center and then transferred to Carolinas Medical Center. Her condition was not released.

Gastonia Police is investigating the bank robbery, and the N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck. Gaston County Police will review the vehicle pursuit.
