EXTRAORDINARY footage has emerged of a bask of up to 23 saltwater crocodiles feasting on a cow in the Northern Territory.

Local boy Banjo Rowe, 9, captured the rare footage — which shows several of the reptiles rolling the bloated cow before taking turns attacking and feeding on it — while fishing with his father at Corroboree billabong on the Mary River, about 110km southeast of Darwin.

The river has the highest density of saltwater crocodiles in the world but according to leading crocodile researcher Grahame Webb it’s extremely unusual to see so many feeding together at once.

Mr Webb, who is also the chairman of the international Crocodile Specialist Group and owner of Darwin’s Crocodylus Park, told news.com.au he had never seen anything like it.

“It’s a real strange thing,” he said.

“Salties are reasonably spread out and usually not on top of each other like that.

“They’re reputed to be most intolerant of other crocs and are very territorial but clearly have the capacity to come together when food is abundant.”

Mr Webb said Banjo — who sent the vision to the croc researcher this week — counted 23 salties taking turns feeding on the cow.

“He estimated there were six big crocs — more than four metres long — and one very big one — more than 5m croc,” Mr Webb said.

“Banjo reckoned it was the best day of his life.”

The footage was filmed just upstream from where Darwin football player Sean Cole, 26, was killed by a crocodile in 2013. He was attending a 30th birthday party on the shore when he accepted a dare to swim across the river but in doing so was taken by a large saltie in front of horrified partygoers.

“Downstream in this same river I counted 100 salties that were more than 3m long on a 200m bank, a few years ago at night. It was next to a barrage at which food seems abundant,” Mr Webb said.
