Shanta Massey fatally shot a 25-year-old man sitting in a car in Algiers nearly two years ago in plain view of an eyewitness who then led investigators to him, New Orleans police alleged in court records released late Monday.

Massey, 24, was transferred to New Orleans' jail earlier Monday following his capture in Texas last month. Orleans Parish Magistrate Court Commissioner Brigid Collins set Massey's bail at $500,000, and he remained behind bars on Tuesday on a count of second-degree murder in the slaying of 25-year-old Jeren Johnson.

Johnson was found shot to death in the passenger seat of a car parked in the 2600 block of Gen. Collins Avenue the night of Dec. 6, 2015. A 20-year-old man in the driver's seat was also wounded in the incident and taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

An arrest warrant affidavit sworn out by Detective Robert Barrere said police came to suspect Massey of murder after speaking with an unidentified witness. In a procedure that was recorded on audio and video, that witness picked Massey out of a photographic line-up of possible suspects in the case, saying he was the one who gunned Johnson down.

It was unclear from Barrere's affidavit whether police have gathered any other evidence linking Massey to Johnson's slaying, such as surveillance camera video.

Massey was at large until the New Orleans police's Violent Offenders Warrant Squad received a tip that he was at an apartment complex in Houston. The squad notified the Harris County, Texas, Sheriff's Office about Massey's whereabouts, and deputies soon arrested him in Houston, police said.

If he is convicted of Johnson's murder, Massey would face mandatory life imprisonment. He hasn't yet been booked with wounding the man in the driver's seat of the car in which Johnson was killed.

Massey has a prior 2011 conviction of illegal possession of a stolen firearm in Jefferson Parish. He was sentenced to probation, according to court records.
