Cleveland Browns Scribbles: I was wrong about Deshaun Watson -- Terry Pluto (video)

The Cleveland Browns had a chance to draft Deshaun Watson. They passed on him. Now, they face him this week in Houston.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Scribbles in my Cleveland Browns notebook as they prepare to face the Houston Texans:

1. I was wrong about Deshaun Watson. When the Browns traded their No. 12 pick to Houston, I was OK with knowing the Texans would take the quarterback from Clemson.

2. The Browns received the No. 25 pick in the 2017 draft. In my video, I said that selection was David Njoku. I also was wrong about that. They used the pick on safety Jabrill Peppers.

3. The trade also gave the Browns a 2018 first rounder from Houston.

4. Houston is delighted to deal two first-rounders for Watson, who has 12 TD passes compared to only four interceptions this season.

5. I went back and read some of my notes about Watson. I was lukewarm about him. I didn't like the fact he threw 17 interceptions in 15 games. He sometimes made some very poor throws in his final year at Clemson.

6. He was clocked throwing the football at 49 mph at the NFL Combine. That's extremely low. Rarely does a quarterback who throws less than 50 mph have much of an NFL career.

7. I worried about his tendency to scramble. He didn't play in an NFL-type offense. I thought he'd have a hard adjustment to the pros.

8. I did make a PD video comparing Watson to Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott. That was BEFORE Watson beat Alabama in the national title game.

9. Like Prescott, I thought Watson had to go to the right team with the right talent to thrive. Houston looks like that team.

10 . Houston was 9-7 in each of the last three years. The Texans also have had a top five defense in each of the last three years.

11. As Prescott stabilized the offense in Dallas and then began to make some plays, Watson has done the same thing in Houston.

12. I ignored the two tremendous games by Watson against Alabama. The Tide is loaded with future NFL players.

13. In reality, I didn't ignore it. I blame Johnny Manziel. While at Texas A&M, Manziel was sensational against the Tide. In two games, he threw for 717 yards -- 7 TDs vs. 2 interceptions.

14. Manziel also rushed for 190 yards in two games against Alabama, and completed 72 percent of his passes. It didn't translate to the pros.

15. I underestimated Watson's maturity and leadership skills. He also plays in the dome in Houston and that accentuates his speed.

16. I rated the top four quarterbacks like this: a) Mitch Trubisky. b) DeShone Kizer. c) Watson. d) Patrick Mahomes.

17. I only liked Tribusky in the first round, but not with the No. 1 pick. I wanted the Browns to draft Myles Garrett at No. 1 and Trubisky at No. 12.

18. The Bears took Tribusky at No. 2. Mahomes was the No. 10 pick. That meant Watson as the third quarterback selected.

19. The Kevin Hogan era begins this week in Houston. The Texans have had some injuries on defense. Maybe that will help Hogan. Maybe I'm just looking for some good news after the Tribe's collapse.

20. My prediction: Houston 24, Browns 15.
