Diamondbacks, Patrick Corbin halt skid with win over Cubs

Patrick Corbin recovered from a rough recent outing to shut down the Cubs on Saturday night.

David Peralta was deprived of oxygen and sported scrapes up and down both arms. But when he returned to a jubilant Diamondbacks dugout on Saturday night, he had given his teammates something they hadn’t had in what felt like forever. He’d given them a reason to smile.

“I didn’t slide home,” Peralta said of the triumphant, tumbling finale to his inside-the-park home run in the eighth inning. “I just laid myself down.”

With their 6-2 win over the Chicago Cubs at Chase Field, the Diamondbacks stopped a three-game losing streak. They held firm on their 4 1/2-game lead on a National League wild-card spot. And they staved off what has felt like a swarm of negative momentum from recent days.

BOX SCORE: Diamondbacks 6, Cubs 2

Their clutch-hitting woes had followed them home from the road. Their pitching staff had gone from making their manager look prescient to making him look helpless. And their home-field advantage, which seemed to be building throughout the summer months, had all but vanished, with throngs of Dodgers and Cubs fans invading Chase Field the past five days.

But Patrick Corbin, just 11 days removed from getting hammered at Wrigley Field, tossed 6 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. The Diamondbacks offense got a pair of big hits off Cubs lefty Jon Lester in a breakout sixth inning. And despite a rocky outing from closer Fernando Rodney, the Diamondbacks put themselves in position to take two of three from the Cubs for the second time this month.

“Overall, it was a nice win for us,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “We’ve been grinding for the past couple of days and for us to get that type of an effort by the entire team, it was a good feeling.”

It started with Corbin, who worked around a shaky first inning, did the same in the fifth, and emerged with one of his better outings of the season against a team that scored seven earned runs off him in three innings earlier this month.

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot – I knew I was going to face them again,” Corbin said. “I just wanted to go out there and have a good outing. It’s all I’ve been really thinking about.”

With a runner on second and one out in the sixth, the Cubs opted to intentionally walk Paul Goldschmidt – who had slammed four home runs in his past two games against them – to bring slugger J.D. Martinez to the plate. It didn’t work out. Martinez lined an RBI double off the wall in right field, giving the Diamondbacks the first of what would be four sixth-inning runs.

“It’s like the lesser of two evils – which one are you going to choose?” Lovullo said. “And they’re both very good hitters on top of being run producers.”

A throwing error by Cubs shortstop Javier Baez resulted in the game’s second run, and Brandon Drury delivered the Diamondbacks’ second big hit of the inning, lining a first-pitch fastball from Lester off the wall in center field for a double to make it 4-0.

It was 5-0 when Peralta lined a ball off the wall in left-center field. He was approaching second when it kicked away from Jon Jay, rolling all the way into no-man’s land in center field. His initial thought, he said, was triple, but that was before he looked up and saw third base coach Tony Perezchica sending him home.

“I was like, ‘Oh, I’m out of gas,’ ” Peralta said.

But he found enough in the tank to cover the final 90 feet, lunging home with a headfirst slide.

“That was good,” he said. “It feels good. I’ve never done it before. It was a special moment for me.”

They didn’t end up needing the run, exactly, but it made Rodney’s inability to record the 27th out a little less panic-inducing. After getting a pair of ground balls to start the ninth, Rodney allowed four consecutive singles, the last of which brought Lovullo from the dugout to make a pitching change. At that point, two runs were in, two runners were on base and Rodney had thrown 26 pitches.

“We wanted to protect his pitch count,” Lovullo said, “and make sure he’s available for tomorrow.”

David Hernandez entered and punched out Ben Zobrist looking to end it, benefitting from what appeared to be a charitable zone on the final pitch of the game.
