Kevin Sumlin has solid comparison for freshman Jhamon Ausbon

Texas A&M must replace four of its top five receivers from last season, and one of the candidates reminds Aggies coach

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M must replace four of its top five receivers from last season, and one of the candidates reminds Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin of a blast from the past.

"He's built differently than a lot of guys," Sumlin said of freshman Jhamon Ausbon. "He's built like Robert Ferguson, for those who remember him."

"Old" Aggies do, no doubt about it. Ferguson played at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds, and was built as sturdy and solid as receivers come. The former Spring Woods High star played a lone season at A&M in 2000, when he was the Big 12 newcomer of the year, for then-coach R.C. Slocum after attending Tyler Junior College.

Ferguson even played a little linebacker and cornerback at TJC before turning in a strong season with the Aggies and moving on to the NFL, where he was a second-round selection of the Green Bay Packers.

The Aggies intend on having Ausbon, who checks in at 6-2 and 220, at least a couple of years longer than Ferguson. Last week at the Slocum Nutrition Center, Sumlin commented that Ausbon is built like a linebacker.

"He's a big, strong guy, he's got good speed and he's really talented," Sumlin said this week of Ausbon, a Houstonian who played at St. Thomas High before finishing his high school career at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. "He's got a good demeanor."

And a robust appetite, which the succulent Slocum Nutrition Center is known to bring about.

"We just keep pushing him to get better and watch his weight a little bit," Sumlin said. "He's around 218, 219, and he needs to stay there and not over 220 this year. He's a young guy, and has been carrying that (steady weight) for a while."

The Aggies return star receiver Christian Kirk but lost Josh Reynolds, Ricky-Seals Jones, Speedy Noil and Jeremy Tabuyo from last year's 8-5 team.

Sumlin also shared a humorous anecdote regarding his too-brief encounter with Ferguson at A&M. Slocum brought onboard Sumlin following the 2000 season as his receivers coach.

"'Ferg' was here one year," Sumlin said, smiling. "I got here and R.C. said, 'Go see Ferg.' Ferg said, 'I'm turning pro, man.'"
